Abstract

The article is concerned with the types of mistakes in audiovisual translation and the issues of its quality assessment. The paper's objective was to create a typology of translation mistakes appropriate for audiovisual texts and to undertake a comparative analysis of three voice-over translations of the American comedy Mrs. Doubtfire. The novelty of the research lies in identifying the mistakes typical of audiovisual texts translation, resulting from the differences in the communicative competence of the source language and target language viewers and the need to take into account non-verbal elements of the text. Another objective was to identify the best translation among those analyzed. Linguostylistic, lexicographic and situational analyses were applied in the data processing. The conducted translation analysis proved that the first translation contained a great number of misinterpretations and normative mistakes which may be explained by the translator's lack of necessary language competence. Some unreasonable omissions were found in the second translation, but it contained the lowest number of misinterpretations and stylistic mistakes. It was also relatively successfully adapted for Russian viewers. The third translation was the most “liberal” one as it contained the greatest number of unreasonable lexical replacements. The third translator tried to adapt the film for Russian viewers by replacing some American realia by Russian ones. This strategy should be used with caution to avoid cognitive dissonance in viewers. The translation quality assessment issue is studied by many researchers, but most of the works on this topic cover the assessment of written monocode text translations or consecutive interpretations. Adaptation of audiovisual (polycode) texts, as a relatively young and very promising translation industry, needs a more detailed research based on authentic materials.
