Abstract

This paper reports a study into the motion of water in a gradually pivoting barrelshaped bowl using a Discretization method. The solutions were performed in a cylindrical basin with a radius equal to 1 m and water level inside the basin at 0.5 m from the bottom of the cylinder. The cylinder was coated with a uniform grid of cubic grid size and a time step of sec. Coriolis parameter f effects on both the free surface elevation and velocity components in the three dimensions were evaluated. The results of this study revealed that the free liquid surface assumed a parabolic shape that could be attributed to the balance between the centrifugal and gravitational forces. Also, it was found that both water surface elevation and velocity components decreased with a Coriolis parameter decrease. The results obtained from this study agree with those obtained using the classical finite element method. Results from such an investigation may have useful applications in oceanographic studies
