Abstract
The article discusses the mental processes, underlying the comprehension of foreign language texts, through the lens of reception theory and P. Bourdieu's theory of ‘social fields' which emphasizes the differences in text interpretation in the field of origin and in the field of reception. Reading comprehension is seen as a hier- archical system of mental operations regulated by metacognitive strategies and based on linguistic and general knowledge. Special attention is paid to narrative as a core component of text representation in a foreign lan- guage
