Abstract

The developments that have taken place in the world in recent years have led to consideration of the phenomenon of migration more seriously. It is necessary to raise the level of knowledge and awareness of individuals about migration. The institutions that will work towards this need are mainly educational institutions. Gaining the skills such as respect for the differences and empathy to the students is a great asset to the migration training. The textbooks used in Turkish lessons in primary education have functions such as developing reading habits of students and enhancing vocabulary, as well as introducing cultural items, providing universal values, and enriching the mind and emotional world of the learners. The aim of this study is to examine the handling of the phenomenon of immigration in primary school Turkish language textbooks and the handling of the factors related to concepts such as immigration, immigrants, refugees. In this study, document scanning / document review of qualitative research techniques was used. The data in the 5th, 6th, 7th and 8th grade textbooks were analyzed by descriptive analysis technique. In the light of the obtained data and existing deficiencies, the researchers' suggestions have been developed in order to raise the knowledge and awareness level of the immigration of the individuals who are wanted to be raised in the educational institutions. At the end of the study, it was determined that the concept of migration was not processed sufficiently in the reading texts in the Turkish textbooks at the secondary school level.
