Abstract
The leaves of Catharanthus roseus, Aegle marmelos, Moringa oleifera, Ageratum conyzoids, collected from Sylhet region in Bangladesh, were extracted using methanol with an aim to investigate antioxidant potential and antibacterial activity. In phytochemical analysis of methanol extract a considerable presence of phenol, flavonoids, terpenoids and alkaloids were found. The bioactivities of the leaf extracts were attributed to their phytochemical constituents. Antimicrobial activity of the extracts were determined against some human pathogenic bacteria such as Staphylococcus aureus, Escherichia coli, Klebsiella sp., Pseudomonas sp .and Salmonella sp. Aegle marmelos leaves extract exerted highest antibacterial activity having a zone of inhibition of 18.67mm and 14.67mm against Salmonella and Pseudomonas, respectively. Antioxidant activity was conducted using the DPPH assay method and the absorbance measured using photometric colorimeter with ascorbic acid as reference compound. IC50 values indicated that Aegle marmelos possessed the highest antioxidant activity, which is followed by Ageratum conyzoids, and the lowest antioxidant activity was exhibited in Catharanthus roseus extract.
