Abstract
Aim Standardizing the curcumin extract for preclinical studies. ObjectivesPreparation of turmeric extract and standardization using commercially available curcumin .Qualitative and quantitative estimation of curcumin content in the extract using HPTLC as Standardization method. Materials and Methods Turmeric obtained from Coimbatore and authentified at Botanical Survey India was pretreated and then extracted using hot percolation process with chloroform and ethanol in soxhlet apparatus. Concentrated ethanolic extract was then standardized by comparing it with commercially available curcumin using High performance thin layer chromatography(HPTLC).Results Retention factor(Rf) value of our extract was found to be exactly similar to commercially available curcumin. The quantity of curcumin in the extract was found to be 48.27mg per gm. Conclusion Thus to conclude standardization of herbal products is essential before any preclinical study and using HPTLC for standardization is simple and sensitive.
