Role of Jivantyadi Churna in managing Tamaka Shwasa (Bronchial Asthma)

Abstract

Background: In a developing country like India, rapid industrialisation is causing air to be more polluted at the same speed, additional changing food habits and life style are weakening the immune system of human body resulting in increased prevalence of respiratory diseases like Bronchial Asthma. As childhood period is most vulnerable so, this disease is more predominant in children population of 6-16 years. Objectives: To understand the efficacy of Jivantyadi Churna in managing Tamaka Shwasa (Bronchial Asthma) in Children. Materials and Methods: A 12 years old male Hindu patient from Jamnagar came to the OPD of Kaumarbhritya department of IPGT & RA, GAU, Jamnagar. Child was having complaints of continuous running nose since 2 years, itching all over body since 15 days, breathlessness since 2 years. Jivantyadi Churna was given in 8 gm total in 3 divided doses (2.6 gm each) orally in the morning, afternoon and evening with Madhu (honey) after meal (Dose was calculated according to Sharngadhara Samhita) for 8 weeks with and further follow up for 8 weeks. Observations and results: Jivantyadi Churna showed marked improvement in all the cardinal features such as breathlessness, cough, awakening in night etc. and haematological parameters viz. lymphocyte, eosinophil, ESR and AEC. During the 8 weeks follow up visits, all the subjective and objective parameters were assessed and there were no reported episodes of above complaints. Conclusion: After completion of treatment, episodes of above symptoms decreased to a major extent, breathlessness was reduced and was seen only on strenuous exercise, wheezing was only during attack of asthma, Kasa Vega (bouts of cough) was very infrequent but not troublesome. Hence, it is concluded that Jivantyadi Churna is effective in managing Tamaka Shwasa (bronchial asthma) in Children.
