To isolate the organisms responsible for asymptomatic bacteriuria and to analyse their antimicrobial susceptibility pattern. METHODS A total of 376 healthy individuals were screened for asymptomatic bacteriuria by collecting mid-stream urine and isolating the organism. RESULTS Asymtomatic bacteriuria was observed in 7 cases (1.9) with female preponderance over male. The majority of the isolates were Escherichia coli (43), followed by Morganella morgani(29).CONCLUSION In the present study there was a prevalence of 1.9 of asymptomatic bacteriuria in general population of Tirunelveli district, and the prevalence was higher in women when compared to men. Most of the isolates were resistant to one or more antibiotics.
