Abstract
The demand for housing has increased significantly during last decade all over the world. It is felt particularly in countries where population growth rate is high and the economy is developing fast. For instance, India is turning to urbanizing at a pace that is higher than the world average. Its cities today are unable to cope with increasing population. In India there is a housing shortfall of nearly 18.7 million homes. This demand cannot be met with conventional method of construction technology. The aim of study is to compare conventional method of construction with prefabricated method of construction. A literature survey was carried out in order to analyze the comparison between the conventional buildings with prefabricated buildings in India and various site visits were carried out conducted to obtain various data to investigate the current situation of residential accommodation in India. In order to compare the cost of conventional method and prefabricated method of construction, a block of single storey to block of G+7 storey building is considered. Prefabricated building is a better, viable and workable technology. Cost of prefabrication is more but have low maintenance cost. Prefabrication with mechanized building systems, with its adaptability and quality consciousness, provides speedy, costs efficient and sustainable solution.
