Abstract
The article deals with the problem of methodology for studying the complex and multifaceted problem of relations between the Russian state and the Bashkir region in the mid-XVI – mid-XVIII centuries. this period can be described as an integration period - the Bashkirs are being integrated into a centralized state system, which began with the voluntary acceptance of Russian citizenship by the Bashkirs. The process was complicated by the fact that Russia and the Bashkirs were at different levels of development, as well as periodic uprisings of the indigenous population. Attempts to analyze the Russian-Bashkir relations as part of the formation of the Rus- sian civilization of the Eurasian type actualize the problem of choosing a research methodology that would allow us to highlight all the facets of the problem. In our opinion, it is most correct to use a pluralistic approach that combines civilizational theory with elements of the theory of frontier modernization
