Abstract

The indiscriminate use of natural resources such as water often inhibits the willingness to pay for it and, above all, to conserve it. The objective of this research was to verify the willingness to pay and the variables that act on it, in the environmental conservation of the left bank of the Tocantins River, where the Sebastião Miranda Waterfront is located, in the municipality of Marabá, Pará, Brazil. The method used was the inductive one, with quantitative and qualitative scope, of an applied nature. The primary data were obtained with the application of 40 semi-structured forms with the passers-by, street vendors and riverside dwellers who frequent this place. Secondary data were obtained on digital platforms such as SciELO, CAPES, Science Direct, Web Science, among others. The analysis of the data indicated that the community that frequents the place, especially the male community, had a higher DAP (n = 13; 28.66%), with a high value (R$ 28.66/month). By age group, the highest value for DAP occurred between 40 and 60 years (R$ 40.00), although this range is small (n = 3; 7.5%). For the level of education, DAP was higher in the individuals sampled with complete primary education (R$ 100.00). Finally, regarding monthly income, the highest DAP was among those with the lowest gain (R$ 500.00), with an average value of R$ 32.25. It was also found that the level of education does not affect DAP, as well as the monthly income. Therefore, this provision is associated with the need and the environmental sensitivity that the user has regarding the environmental services that he enjoys from the natural resource.
