Abstract
The Infinitive is historically a noun derived from a verb stem. English Infinitive had two separate forms: a)simple infinitive representing the nominative and accusative of the verbal noun, b) an Infinitive Preceded by representing the dative case of the same noun. The preposition to denotes direction or purpose. In the course of time both suffixes ( - on, - enne ) were dropped and we have now one form – drink. In modern English, the Infinitive with to is much more commoner than the bare Infinitive. In most cases, the datival meaning is lost and the preposition has become merely the sigh of the Infinitive. But it is even now not always formal in
In some cases, it has its full form.
