Abstract

The presnt study was conducted on labour working in agricultural regulated markets in Punjab. A sample of 120 mandi workers from two districts of Punjab namely Mansa and Barnala was selected. The study revealed that all the workers were male and majority of them were migrated from Bihar and Utter Pradesh. The mean age of the workers was around 36 years. The labour was doing various activities such as loading unloading of crop produce, weighing, packing stitching the bags etc. in the markets. The major problems reported by the respondents were lack of proper facility of toilet/ washroom, unavailability of drinking water and no provision of resting place in the market. Hence, the study suggested that proper infrastructure facilities should be developed in the markets and be provided to the workers for smooth functioning of mandi activities and for the betterment of the labour working there.
