Abstract
Purpose: A retrospective research was carried out to elicit the management and outcome of preeclampsia among women in maternity unit of University of Calabar Teaching Hospital, Calabar between January, 2013 to December, 2017. This study was brought about due to prevalence of preeclampsia and its associated complications. Objectives: Three (3) specific objectives were to determine prevalence of preeclampsia, the treatment regimen utilized in management of preeclampsia and the outcome of preeclampsia among pregnant women in maternity unit of UCTH. Methods: The sample size was 197 charts of pregnant women suffering from preeclampsia. Data was extracted through the use of checklist, no sampling technique was used. The instrument was validated by the researchers' who checked for face validity. Data was collected by reviewing records and folders of pregnant women that were diagnosed of preeclampsia. Results: The result revealed that the prevalence of preeclampsia from January, 2013 β December, 2017 was 7.34%. Conclusions: Based on the finding, conclusion were made that regular training workshops and seminars for midwives, medical practitioners, and other relevant health workers on preeclampsia and the current advances in its management will go a long way to rescue patients during the crisis.
