Abstract
Cancer of the bladder is the second most common cancer of the urogenital tract after that of the prostate. The aim was to confront the anatomopathological findings of bladder tumors with the results of urinary cytology. It is a descriptive prospective study of a series of 82 suspected cases of having a bladder tumor, and having benefited from a urinary cytology over a period of 2 years, from January 2013 to December 2014.. All patients had cystoscopy. Males represented 89%, smoking was the main risk factor in 70% of cases, macroscopic haematuria was present in 87% of the cases. The most common histological type was urothelial carcinoma in 100%. 27 patients had a pTa stage, 17 had pT1, and 10 had pT2. The rest of the patients did not have the tumor. The cytology was negative in 25 patients among them17 had a pTa stage the pT1 stage was objectivated in 7 patients, whereas a single patient had a pT2 stage. 28 cases did not have the tumor. Urinary cytology contributes to the initial diagnosis of bladder tumor, but it is of interest for monitoring patients during and after treatment.
