Awareness of Consumption of Oral Rehydration Solution (ORS) Among Acute Diarrheal Attacks in Their Children Under Five Year of Age

Abstract

Abstract: Acute diarrhea is one of the leading causes of under-ve mortalities all over the world and specically in developing countries with the annual mortality rate of 1.071 million. Objectives: To determine the awareness of consumption of Oral Rehydration Solution (ORS) among mothers during acute diarrheal attacks in their children under ve year of age. Methods: 375 women having one child under ve years of age were selected and interviewed with a self- structured questionnaire. The collected data were analyzed through SPSS version 24.0 and Microsoft Excel. Results: majority of the mothers were around 30 years and 36% were graduated and 10.9% post- graduated. 73.1% mothers considered ORS as remedy for diarrhea. 82.4% mothers were aware about ORS preparation. 90.7% mothers agreed that ORS prevent dehydration. 90.9% mothers agreed that ORS should be prepared from boiled water and 86.4% mothers said that each time before preparing ORS hands should be cleaned and washed with soap.44.3% mothers agreed that ORS can be given without doctors' prescription and 51.8% agreed that it can be given during vomiting. 93.6% mothers agreed that ORS can be given along with soft diet like khichri and banana. Conclusions: Majority of the mothers were aware regarding the effectiveness of Oral Rehydration Solution (ORS) during acute diarrheal attacks in their children under ve years of age.
