Abstract
The Ukrainian industrial language which was previously recorded in the ‟RussianUkrainian Dictionary” (1924–1933) edited by A. Krymskyi and S. Yefremov is dealt with in this specific article. With the help of the specially designed vocabulary-based tool the approximate number of such words has been estimated, which is over five percent from all the words of Ukrainian origin. It was found that the researched source of lexicography contained a large number of biological (including botanical and zoological nomenclature), medical, chemical, technical, mathematical, juridical, physical, military and geological vocabulary units. During the investigation process, the correlation of basic grammatical, word-forming, stylistic and other features of industry lexemes structure was well established. In addition, the comparative analysis with modern correspondences was implemented. The conducted research highlighted a holistic picture of the development of different fields of knowledge in Ukraine in the early twentieth century as well as the formation of the terminological apparatus. The largest part of the abovementioned vocabulary was included in the databases of the latest linguistic and terminological dictionaries and consequently, became the property of contemporary science. However, the RussianUkrainian Dictionary of the years 1924–1933 also contained quite a number of extremely rare, unreported till now and outdated units. The most distinguished lexemes were found in technical and juridical fields of science. According to the research, the conception of synonymy can be discerned as the hallmark of the majority of recorded units of this lexicographic source. Some articles on vocabulary science provided a number of different equivalents that included a usage of dialects and obsoletes. The great factual material gathered in this research work demonstrated and evidenced the process of development of Ukrainian industrial vocabulary as well as the consistency and, in contrary, the variability of some of its elements over the centuries.
