Matrix Metalloproteinase-8 in Saliva and Gingival Crevicular Fluid After Scaling and Root Planing in Chronic Periodontitis With And Without Type 2 Diabetes Mellitus

Abstract
Diabetes mellitus and periodontitis are chronic disease found in the world and epidemiological evidence illustrates the existence of a two-way relationship between of both diseases.The condition of diabetes mellitus can worsen the periodontal condition, while periodontitis can also worsen glycemic control. Increased saliva and gingival crevicular fluid (GCF)of matrix metalloproteinase-8 (MMP-8) in chronic periodontitis (CP) patients with and without type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) are associated with increased inflammation of periodontal tissue. The treatment of periodontitis with scaling and root planing (SRP) can contribute to improving glycemic control and reducing MMP-8.The aim of the this study was to compare clinical parameters and level of MMP-8 in Saliva and GCF 2 weeksafter SRP in CP with and without T2DM.This study was performed in 30 subjects (15 CP with T2DM and 15 CP without T2DM patients). Both group were recorded for clinical parameters [papillary bleeding index (PBI), gingival index (GI), probing depth (PD) and clinical attachment loss (CAL)], level of MMP-8 saliva and GCF (ELISA) before and 2 weeks after SRP.There was significant reduction of clinical parameters, level of MMP-8 GCF (p<0,05) in CP with and without T2DM, and level of MMP-8 saliva in CP with T2DM patients2 weeks after SRP. Only PBI showed significant difference in clinical parameters changes between CP with and without T2DM group. There is significant difference in changes MMP-8level in saliva between CP with and without T2DM Group.
