TRIZ as a Problem-Solving Approach for Architectural Design Education: The Case of Jordan

Abstract
Design is that part of human experiencethat concerns the process of interaction between designers and their environment. It is essentially a rational, logical, sequential process depends on problem-solving approach that intend to find the appropriate solutions. Engineers to solve problems andto find solutions that are more creative use TRIZ (the Russian Theory of Solving Inventive Problems) approach. This approach can be adapted by architects to generate a design solution by means of reasoning matching of technical, functional, contextual, and inspirational of the design process. The study further develops the significance of TRIZ in architecture education. It shows how by identifying the 40 TRIZ designing principles, the novice designers develop a methodology based on practical, summative andexperiential frameworks. A trial implementation showed notable progress in the performance of a group of second year students at the Department of Architecture Engineering at Middle East University after adopting the TRIZ approach. The teaching methodology proves to be effective in helping students overcome difficulties arising due to the lack of experience in architectural design. The study concludes with proposals for using problem-solving strategies such as TRIZ that can evoke students' way of thinking in solving design problems. It finds that the architectural students primarily use the context constraints that match with the design requirements to initiate design concepts and generate solutions.
