Why Do Professionals Stay? - A Study on Why People Continue to Stay in Their Jobs in India

This study was prompted by trying to understand, why Professionals in Indiacontinue their services in an organization for long. What reasons prompt professionals who are qualified and who have multiple alternative job opportunities available to them, to continue their services and not jump ship? The results of this study could be useful to understand the mindset of professionals with reference to Indian culture and have implications for formulating the right HRM Practices and policies suited for organizations in Indianspecific context. The study used both structured andsemi structured questionnaire method to study professionalswho were teachingfaculty of MBA at a prominent university in India. These professionals wereinterviewed with specific questions pertaining to thevarious dimensions of Job Embeddedness. Interestingly findings revealed that the decision to stay seemed to more rooted in the personal lives of professionals like owning their current home and being comfortable in their current neighbourhood as well as access to supermarket, school etc as well as having the responsibility to take care of old parents, in- laws as well as children. These factors seemed to take precedence over other factors in Indian context.
