Abstract
The word dialysis derived from Greek word dialusis, meaning dissolution,diameaning through,andlysismeaningloosening.Dialysisisaprocessforremovingwasteand excesswaterfrom theblood,andisprimarilyusedtoprovideanartificialreplacement forlostkidneyfunctioninpeoplewithrenalfailure.Dialysismaybeusedforthosewith anacutedisturbanceinkidneyfunctionorforthosewithprogressivebutchronically worseningkidney function. Thenumberofpatientsbeingtreatedforend-stagerenal disease(ESRD)globallywasestimatedtobe2,786,000attheendof2011and, with a 6-7% growthrate,continuestoincreaseatasignificantlyhigherratethantheworld population.Ofthese2,786,000ESRDpatients,approximately2,164,000wereundergoing HDtreatment. Inviewofincreasingnumberofkidneypatientitisvitalthatnursesmustbe skilledinrenalnursing,maintainahighstandardofclinicalpractice,haveexcellent communicationskills,anddeveloptheindividualleadershipandmanagementalbilities. Nursesshouldbeinvolvedinmultiprofessionaldiscussionswheredecisionsaremade aboutchanges in patient treatment. In addition, nurses require the clinical skills and competencies to managerenal patients in different stages of their illness and on particular RRT modalities. (Bouallègueetal, 2013).
