Abstract
This research deals with the effect of material selection on the failure limits of a metallic part (elastic element ) of a fixed dimension which can be used in different applications as in load cells then a compression type load cell was chosen for this purpose. Five types of steels of different chemical composition were chosen as a raw materials for this element to study the effect of these different compositions in failure limits for this element under loading, also the geometry of this element was studied by choosing two types of sections one of them is a round section and the other is square section. Another factor is studied as termed mass effect or ruling section and its effect on failure limits of the elastic metallic element. From results it was noticed that the section of the element have an effect on failure limits and the square section is better than the other, also the chemical composition of the selected steels have a big effect on the failure limits of the element and the low alloy steel type 42CrMo4 is the best between all selected steels. On the other hand the ruling section is considered important factor in selecting a particular steel in design.
