Abstract

Dentine hypersensitivity is a widespread clinical finding, which defined as a short, sharp pain because of thermal, evaporative, tactile, osmotic or chemical stimuli. Despite of an existence of a big variety types of dentine hypersensitivity treatment, it is still need to find «gold» standard treatment with long-term effect of decreasing of pain. The aim of this clinical study was to assess effi-cacy of sodium fluoride varnish application, diode laser (810 nm) irradiation, ethanolic extract of propolis appli-cation and combined diode laser (810 nm) irradiation with ethanolic extract of propolis application for reducing of dentine hypersensitivity in patients with chronic gen-eralized periodontitis. Materials and Methods: 104 patients with den-tine hypersensitivity and chronic generalized periodontitis included in this study. The degree of sensitivity of dentine hypersensitivity was determined using Schiff sensitivity scale. Each tooth response measured by two stimuli: thermal evaporative stimulus as air blast and probing as tactile stimulus. The patients were randomly divided into four groups according to the treatment. In the first group sodium fluoride varnish was applied on sensitive teeth, in the second group sensitive teeth were treated application of ethanolic extract of propolis, in the third group diode laser (810 nm) irradiation on sensitive teeth was used, in the fourth group – combined application of ethanolic extract of propolis with diode laser (810 nm) irradiation on sensitive teeth was used. The treated teeth were evaluated using Schiff sensitivity scale after treatment and at one week, one month, three months and six months postoperatively. In all groups after applying of treatment the patients were instructed not to rinse, eat or drink for 30 minutes after the treatment and to avoid using any other desensitizing agent in the all period of the research. All the data were entered into Microsoft Excel sheet. The evaluations were analyzed using IBM SPSS Statistics, Version 25.0(Armonk, NY: IBM Corp.). Mean and standard deviation were calculated for each group. Wilcoxon's rank sum test and Friedman's test were used. Values of p < 0.05 were accepted as statistically signifi-cant. Results: 104 patients with dentine hypersensi-tivity and chronic generalized periodontitis completed our study. No significant differences between the treatment groups were found at baseline (p > 0.05). All four groups showed a significant reduction in the Schiff sensitivity scale scores immediately after treatment comparison with the baseline scores. The most long-term results were obtained in group with combined treatment using etha-nolic extract of propolis and diode laser (810 nm). Conclusion: In our study was assessed efficacy of four types of dentine hypersensitivity treatment. All groups showed statistically significant result. The present study demonstrates that better result has been noted in group with combined application of ethanolic extract of propolis with diode laser (810 nm) irradiation. Thus, it was concluded that combined application of ethanolic extract of propolis with diode laser (810 nm) irradiation could be suggested for dentine hypersensitivity treatment because of immediate and long-term reduce in the level of pain.
