Abstract

Rotating machinery like turbines, generators, pumps, gearboxes, motors, etc. are widely used in industrial applications. For keeping such machines in working condition all the time, it is necessary to monitor the condition of machines. Condition monitoring (CM) is one of the principal predictive maintenance tools, which monitor the condition of machinery and predict the defects/faults in them in early stages and avoids major catastrophic losses and thus leads higher efficiency. There are number of CM techniques available to monitor the health of machines; these are visual inspection, vibration signal analysis (VSA), oil analysis, wear debris analysis, temperature monitoring, acousticemission analysis (AEA), motor current analysis, etc. Out of these CM techniques, VSA is the most popular and commonly used CM technique. These VSA techniques are mainly categorized into the following groups: time domain, frequency domain and time-frequency domain. In this paper, introduction of widely used VSA techniques for diagnosis of faults in rotating machinery is presented first and then the brief review of recent research and developments in use of these techniques is presented. This paper may help the new researchers to understand the VSA techniques and the latest research carried out in the field of fault diagnosis in rotating machinery using VSA techniques.
