Abstract

In spite of remarkable growth of Indian economy gender wage gap is still persistent in varying degrees in rural as well as urban area in different parts of India The picture is the same in Uttarakhand where women constitute almost half of the population in Uttarakhand and their skills and talent are necessary to achieve greater and faster economic growth but there position and wages in the labor market is not reflecting this. In Uttarakhand women in the hilly regions are engaged in agricultural activities and supplement a major share in family income by raising food grains, oilseeds, vegetables, fruits, milk, wool, fuel, fiber, timber etc. There is underrepresentation and undervaluation of productivity of women in the labor market. The current study aims at establishing results to understand the gender wage gap at micro level in Uttarakhand by the collection of primary and secondary data. The study aims at measuring the difference in workforce participation and labor force participation rates between genders across Uttarakhand. The paper also attempts to measure and analyze the extent of wage gap between genders within different salary groups and with respect to different employment characteristic i.e. Age, Sector, Type of Employment and Marital Status, Education level, Work Experience and Designation.
