Abstract
This study focuses on the impact of governance and more specifically on autonomy as a major dimension and mechanism in the context of higher education and its role in improving of the performance of education. Thus, the aim of our research is to address the close relationship between academic autonomy and the performance of public higher education institutions by taking the case of the University of Sfax as an example. The quantitative study of the different members of the Scientific Council of each institution shows that the governance of higher education, a key dimension of the health of the system, has a strong impact on the performance of higher education systems.
