Abstract
Urban traffic incidents such as road accidents, disabled vehicles, roadway maintenance, reconstruction projects, and special non-emergency events, etc. lead to traffic congestion, increased travel time, increased fuel consumption, and pollutant emissions. The paper presents the modeling of a random incident of the urban road segment under mixed traffic flow conditions using the open-source traffic simulator, namely SUMO (Simulation of Urban MObility). Several scenarios of the traffic incidents are also established to examine, analyze and evaluate the impact of the random incidents on the travel time of road users and traffic congestion in Hanoi (Vietnam), where mixed traffic flow is dominated by motorcycles. Simulation results show that incident duration impacts travel time and congestion. As it increases, mean speed and throughput decrease, at the same time travel time and congestion level increase.
