Abstract

The Misings are the second largest tribe of Assam scattered in 11 districts of the state. With a total population of 6,80,424 and sex ratio of 967/1000 as per 2011 census they are dwelling mostly on the valley of Brahmaputra and its tributaries. The Misings are mostly agriculturalist and their economic structure is essentially based on agricultural production. The womenfolk play a very important role in the economic life of the community. They participate in almost all kind of activities connected with agricultural production and along with that they are also engaged in weaving and livestock namely fowls, pigs, chicken, goat etc which forms the main source of income for an average Mising family. As compared to other tribes of Assam Misings are still lagging in the sphere of education especially among the women folk of the community. The main focus of this paper is on the present educational status of the women and their role in the economic upliftment. An attempt has been made to highlight the various problems that are impeding the economic and social status of the women. A case study has been conducted on the present educational status of women in the Mising society and their role in the economic upliftment of the society. The study is based on primary data. Data is collected by random sampling method
