Abstract

One of the latest technologies being incorporated in the advanced manufacturing era is the Digital Twin Technology. A Digital Twin is a digital depiction of its physical aspect with all of its dynamics. It replicates, not just the physical object but also its behaviour and its entire life cycle. Digital Twins combine technologies such as artificial intelligence (AI), Machine Learning (ML), Internet of Things (IoT) and Data Analytics for creating a simulated digital twin of an existing physical counterpart which exactly replicates and changes as per their actual physical equivalent. Implementing Digital Twin Technology optimizes the operation and maintenance of physical systems and manufacturing processes within the firm. This helps the firm attain maximum profitability and shareholder value. This paper explains what Digital Twin Technology is, what it comprises of, its importance, future scope for digital twin market and its role in advanced manufacturing. This paper also provides the significance of incorporating this technology in the production process in order to leverage its various benefits like reduced production time, costs and effective product development. These benefits are justified with the help of case studies and experiments and predictive studies.
