Abstract
Effusion otitis media (EOM) is characterized by the presence
of serous fluid in the middle ear without acute inflammation or infection. EOM is one of the most common childhood disorders. Although the symptoms associated with EOM are usually mild, the main complaint is hearing loss. In preschool years, a clear and impressive language disorder may occur. Sometimes gasliquid level or air bubbles may be seen through the tympanic membrane with otoscopy examination in EOM. Tympanometry is an excellent aid in the assessment of middle ear status and management of middle ear inflammation. Treatment strategies for EOM can be protective, pharmacological, or surgical. Where surgery is less appropriate, hearing aids should be offered as an alternative.
