Abstract
Competency-based approach to teaching in the Higher education system focusing on the result as the ability to act in different situations implies that achieving of high level communicative competence, assimilating of some general cultural competences by the students and acquisition of instructive experience which makes effective communication possible take part during the process of the language personality formation. The specified goals are being approached via teaching of the Humanities correlating with the subject “speech culture” which is based on the historical and cultural approach in theoretical aspects as well as in practical teaching of communicative strategies and tactics. The material corresponding to the goal is contained in Russian classical literature capturing significant facts of Russian history and providing historical, social and cultural experience. Examples of speech behavior of the heroes of the historical novel “The Captain's Daughter” by A. Pushkin are used to demonstrate the actualization of Russian speech ideal established with the accordance of the 18th century code of conduct. The continuity of ethical and behavioral principles which defines the relations between an individual and a society, marks the boarders of individual's freedom and defines criteria of self-evaluation. The analysis of typical speech behavior features for the communicants of the past expands communicative experience of the students and provides the possibility to evaluate modern language facilities more adequately.
