Abstract

Shipbuilding industry employs product modelling techniques for design and construction stages of ships. Utilisation of ship product models in the postcommissioning stages is limited. Recycling is one of the major life cycle activities of ships. The paper explores the need to apply product modelling concepts to recycling stages of ships. A concept termed ‘Product Modelling for Ship Recycling' (PMSR) has been proposed, in the form of guidelines, for extending ‘modelling for' concept in ship recycling application. PMSR guidelines are intended for carrying out enrichment of 3D models of ships at various life cycle stages of ships and for making a ship closer to real Transparent Ship. Such a Transparent Ship would act as an efficient information platform for developing a digital twin of ships. Two dimensional views of a product model of a bulk carrier have been presented in the paper to highlight the desired features of a ship's product model for recycling application. Ship product model which is enhanced with the aspects proposed in the paper can function as a Ship Construction File-specific document that contain the recycling related information specified by International Maritime Organisation, as part of the Goal Based Ship Construction Standards
