Abstract

Identifying the Impediments and Unlocking the Potentials of Technical and Vocational Education for Mitigating COVID-19 Induced Job Lost in Nigeria was carried out using secondary data to obtain information. Technical and vocational education also known as Technical Vocation Education and Training (TVET) is the type of education that leads to acquisition of vocational and technical skills, industrial and technological development that had been a major tool for national development, economic enlightenment, self-reliance and citizenship empowerment. It providesits recipients with the basic cognitive and practical skills necessary for entrance into the labour market as employees or as self-employed. Despite the potentials of technical and vocational education in job creation, technological advancement and national development, this important aspect on Nigerian education is still faced with notable impediments and challenges as highlighted in the paper. The impediments are grossly responsible for inability of Nigerian technical and vocational education to achieve its stated goals to trainyouths with marketable skills for self and paid jobs.It is imperative to state that unemployment rate in Nigeria is increasing and worsened by the global outbreak of novel Covid-19. It is therefore considered as a step in the right direction to employ the full potentials of technical and vocational education for mitigating Covid19 induced job lost in Nigeria through strategic measures to properly position technical and vocational education for massive job creation in the face of the pandemic.
