Abstract
The world in which we are living is still confronting to the three major issues viz. poverty and hunger, quality primary education and environmental sustainability of development programs. The realization of the fact about the planning of rural housing is clearly evident in the statement of LAURIE BAKER “Rural housing is more complex than urban housing as it usually has to cope not only with human beings but with livestock as well”. Most of the surveys and their reports regarding sanitation in rural areas have revealed the poor quality of toilets even those which come under TSC (Total Sanitation Campaign) some times due to inadequacy of funds. As the variation in geo-climatic conditions, availability or non-availability of different building materials in the region, living habits of people in different parts of the country and sometimes hazard scenario influence the typology of buildings in rural areas, therefore the study of local typology becomes an important part of any planning for rural development in terms of environmental sustainability in rural housing. This paper finds the inclusion of eco sanitation in rural housing in hills be a better deal as scarcity of water in the hills is a very common phenomenon and eco-san which is a part of ecological life style seems to be a solution for the conservation of water and improvement of soil health in hills.
