Abstract
Wavelet based image compression schemes are highly popular due to the flexibility inherent in the design of wavelets which allows for efficient compression performance. However, the standard wavelets available have not been designed exclusively for image compression but are general purpose wavelets employable in other image processing applications as well. This feature of the standard wavelets implies that they are not optimized for image compression schemes and hence show image-dependence in their performance. This paper proposes a new family of wavelets, the Adslets, designed exclusively for the purpose of image compression. These wavelets can be used on any image satisfactorily, irrespective of its dominant features. As such, the Adslets are capable of rendering an image independent compression scheme.
