NON-EQUIVALENT LEXIS IN THE POEM "DEAD SOULS" BY N.V. GOGOL: FEATURES OF TRANSLATION IN ENGLISH

This paper considers such theoretical issues as relation between the concept "equivalent-lacking vocabulary" and concepts "nationally biased lexical units", "lexical gaps/lacunae". Equivalent-lacking lexical units represented in "Dead Souls" by N. Gogol as well as ways of their translation into English have been analyzed and classified. Two translations of the poem: by Ch. J. Hogarth (1915) and R. Pevear and L. Volokhonsky (1996) have been examined and compared.
