Abstract
The article presents an analysis of the essentialist and anti-essentialist modes of theorizing in sociology. Essentialism is marked by naturalization and the prescription of fundamentality and immutability to the essences of social reality. Anti-essentialism stands out for its relationalism in relation to the construction of social space as a space of mutually determining connections between social positions.
