Abstract

Introduction. The analysis of typical design solutions of port piled quay walls is presented. In Ukrainian seaports they were erected mainly 50-60 years ago and earlier. Fast vessels development requires corresponding parameters of the quay walls. That's why it is essentially important to study reserves of piles bearing capacity. Purpose. It is necessary to determine the field of application of the considered structures at the modern conditions as well as to assess possibilities of their operation without modernization or by mean of reconstruction. There are determined the main reasons of the limitations of the field of application for the considered structures. These reasons include a deficit of both strength and bearing capacity. Results. Concrete samples of the piled quay walls constructed or reconstructed in some Ukrainian seaports are considered. For such seaports as Chernomorsk (former Illychevsk) on the Black Sea, Mariupol and Berdyansk on the Sea of Azov technical and operational parameters of the piled quay walls are analyzed; their advantageous and shortcomings are determined. To improve typical design and to increase its bearing capacity the innovative suggestion on providing 3D framework for each pile is considered. Such approach allows favorable redistribution of the external loading. Horizontal loads are adopted by piles connected with the quay's cap. Vertical loads partially or totally are transferred to the bottom's soil via bearing shoe of the framework. Different connection solutions between pile's head and the structure's cap are proposed depending on soil conditions in the bottom ground. Conclusions. Considered innovative approach may be successfully applied to create piled berthing structures of increased bearing capacity. The next task is to provide more universal solution for piled quay walls which contain stone fill slope under the piled cap.
