The article presents the results of the assessment of changes in vegetation cover in the city of Stavro- pol using the vegetation index NDVI. The territories of closed and open type are identified, which are deter- mined by the permeability of the soil. Urban land areas are classified according to the prevailing type of vegeta- tion cover in green areas. The changes in vegetation biomass in the urban environment from 1990 to 2020 are analyzed. The dynamics of changes in the types of vegetation cover that have a negative impact on the ecosys- tem of the city is revealed. Recommendations for improving the urban planning system to improve the environ- mental situation in the city are given
