Abstract
The article is devoted to one of the main problems of modern preschool pedagogy: the underdevelop- ment of coherent monological and dialogical speech in a child. The works of modern Russian scientists and clas- sics of world pedagogy devoted to the declared problem are considered. The constituent elements of the concept of linguistic ability are distinguished, three main periods of development of child speech are studied. The main functions of the development of monological speech have been identified: regulatory, expressed in the under- standing of literary works, subordination to the instruction of an adult; planning, pre-solving practical and intel- lectual problems; sound, highlighting the word as an abstract unit, as well as the functions of a special type of arbitrary activity and the creation of prerequisites for the development of literacy. The conclusion was made about the importance of interaction of parents of pupils with teachers of a preschool educational institution
