Abstract
The diagnosis of periodontal disease is based on traditional diagnostic parameters such as probing depth, bleeding on probing, clinical attachment levels, assessment of plaque, calculus and alveolar bone levels. These parameters only reflects the past periodontal destruction and not current disease status. Hence various clinical trials have been attempted to identify potential biomarkers of periodontal disease activity. These substances known as biomarkers help in determination of inflammatory mediator levels, as they are good indicators of inflammatory activity. This review highlights recent advances in the use of gingival crevicular fluid (GCF) biomarker-based disease diagnostics that focus on the identification of active periodontal disease.
