Abstract
Burning mouth syndrome (BMS), or stomatodynia, is characterized by a burning sensation in the tongue or other parts of the oral cavity, usually in the absence of clinical or laboratory findings. The complaints are reported more often in women, especially after menopause. The etiological factors can be divided into: (1) systemic, (2) local, (3) psychogenic and psychiatric, and (4) idiopathic.
