Abstract

A variety of abnormalities of coagulation is seen in patients with liver diseases. The magnitude of haemostatic abnormalities correlates with the degree of parenchymal damage. Reduced clotting factor synthesis may predispose to bleeding, which may be exacerbated by dysfibrinogenaemia, thrombocytopenia and increased fibrinolysis, reflected by prolonged Prothrombin Time (PT) and International Normalized Ratio (INR). Fresh Frozen Plasma (FFP) for transfusion is most often used when a patient has abnormal results on coagulation screening tests, as a treatment or for prophylaxis which is presumed to improve the clinical outcome and laboratory results.
