Abstract

In spite of the Government of Kenya effort to stem out the culture of student unrests in schools, the nature of the unrests have taken a dramatic turn for the worse in some regions. It has resulted to disruption of learning, destruction of property and even lives have been lost. The study sought to establish school leadership factors that contribute to students unrest in Mwingi East Sub County, Kitui Count. Descriptive survey research design was adopted. The population of the study was drawn from all the twenty nine (29) secondary schools in the sub county and was selected by purposive sampling on the basis of specific characteristics including mixed day, boys boarding, girls boarding, mixed boarding, girls day and boys day secondary schools. Stratified random sampling technique was appropriate for this study since the sample was drawn from all the categories of schools. Data was collected by use of questionnaires which were administered to the respondents selected. Analysis of data was carried out using simple descriptive statistics. The study showed that management factors that lead to students unrests in Mwingi East Sub County include; school fees increment, leadership wrangles, poor infrastructure, and harsh leadership styles.
