Knowledge and Attitude Regarding Electroconvulsive Therapy among Nursing Students

Abstract
Electroconvulsive therapy (ECT) is a therapeutic method used for the treatment of mentally ill patients. A recent study found that ECT is used more often than medications in severe cases of depression. It was proven then that ECT could be a life-saving modality, decreasing suicidal ideations and suicide attempts in severe cases of depression. Study was aimed to assess the knowledge and attitude regarding electroconvulsive therapy among nursing students. Methodology - The study was conducted in the nursing institute having parent tertiary care hospital.60 Participants were included after obtaining informed consent, through convenient sampling technique and the study was approved by the Research and Ethics Committee of the Institute. Data was analyzed according to the objectives of the study using descriptive and inferential statistics. Findings- Majority of sample 65 % were within the age group of 18-20 With respect to gender 90 % were female and 10 % were male. Majority of students 51.66 % belongs to nuclear family, Majority of students fathers education 83.33 % were in no formal education the level of knowledge among nursing students. It depict that 71.66 % were having average knowledge, 28.33 % were having poor knowledge, and 0 % were having good knowledge. Majority 31 % were having strongly agree attitude, 25 % were having neither agree nor disagree, and 18 % were agree attitude, 13.34 % were having strongly disagree attitude, 11.67 % were having disagree attitude. There was no any significant association found between the knowledge ofnone of the socio-demographic variables was found to have significant association with the level of knowledge.
