Abstract

There are various reasons that cause students to engage in anti-social behaviour. Some of the reasons include school factors, school curricular, personality of the students, teachers, head teachers, and violation of basic human needs. Poor leadership and poor classroom management may frustrate the students to the point of them becoming aggressive or taking revenge in order to seek audience. This revenge takes various forms such as bullying, insults and assaults, arson, stealing and drug abuse. The study examined complaints students have about their schools in terms of facilities, school environment, and behaviour of the members of the school community. The study was guided by Maslows human needs theory. Questionnaires were used to collect data from 649 participants. The study concludes that failure to provide basic needs to students and to create a conducive learning atmosphere in schools frustrates students who in turn go on strike and destroy school property. The study recommends that there should be forums for training the youth and teachers about conflict management.
