Abstract

Several crises have occurred in the health sector in Kenya that have adversely affected the reputation and financial health of many health facilities. This research sought to investigate the prevalence of crises in the health sector in the County of Bungoma. The study used mixed method. Structured questionnaires were used to quantitative data from a stratified sample of 32 staff workers, while in-depth interviews were used to solicit opinions from 8 purposively selected heads of departments. Research findings showed a high prevalence of crises at the Hospital.31.25 % and 21.87 % of the respondents observed that strikes and shortage of drugs are the leading problems to the health facility.37.5 % stated that the strikes occur after one year.75 % of the respondents believed that the health care facility could forecast most of the crisis. The high crisis prevalence explains the negative consequences the hospital and patients face. Patients are the most hit by these adverse events considering that they are the primary beneficiaries of health care services offered by the hospital. A number of areas for further research are suggested.
