Abstract
Watershed is an area which drains water on a single point. It can be defined as area covers all the land which contributes run off to common point or outlet and surrounded ridge line. Present paper is an effort to disclose the utility of watersheds in ravenous areas. District Dholpur of Rajasthan is the badly sufferer from the problem of ravines so the district Dholpur is chosen for the study because there are bad land topography with large number of ravines as well as ravines being wide due to regular soil erosion. Soil erosion is not only a problem but also there is the fear of dacoits which lives in these ravines. The ravines are on the bank of Chambal River and they caused by quick growing due to steeps look on the river banks and adjoining areas. Dholpur district is situated at 260 22 to 260 57 north latitude and 770 14 to 780 16 east Longitude having area of 3034 Square Kilometre. The techniques adopted to control the origin and widening of ravines under watershed management program are contour bonding, contour trenching, contour stone walls, bend terraces, land levelling, bush-wood check dams, loose stone check dams etc. all technique control the free flow of water which decreases the gullies or sheet erosion in project Ares.
