Abstract
In this research project the correlation between our health and the built environment in which we live in is investigated. Specifically, this project answers the question, Is our built environment more conducive to physical activity or is it more auto-centered And, If we have a more bicycle and pedestrian friendly environment would we be healthier Although there are several factors that instigate the onset of an illness, clinical research has shown frequently that proper health maintenance and engagement in physical activities like walking and bicycling can counteract the pernicious consequences of these ailments. The objectives are met through a comprehensive survey of literature that addresses both the most ubiquitous diseases in the United States and the curative effects of physical activity that can ameliorate or even preclude these inflictions. The results of a survey questionnaire, which was distributed to faculty, staff, and graduate students who live around the University of Delaware campus, are presented. Statistical analysis of the survey is presented, and shows that the majority of the respondents firmly believe that physical activity improves human health. Additionally, the survey results indicate that the majority of the respondents are in favor of a built environment whose infrastructural design is favorable to individuals who partake in walking and bicycling. Suggestions for future research in this area are presented.
