Intrasellar Meningioma Mimicking Pituitary Adenoma: (Case Report)

Intrasellar meningiomas are rare tumors that have the ability to mimic non-functioning pituitary adenomas. The authors report a 65-year-old man with complaints of intermittent pulsatile headache for 6 months and visual disturbance. A magnetic resonance image (MRI) showed a large heterogeneously enhanced intrasellar mass lesion, occupying hypophyseal fossa. The patient underwent microscopic transsphenoidal surgery for removal of the tumor. Microscopic examination and immunohistochemical staining of the tumor specimen was performed and confirmed the diagnosis of meningioma. The authors emphasize that careful evaluations of MR imaging will allow the correct preoperative diagnosis in patients with intrasellar meningioma mimicking pituitary macroadenoma.
